Taking  Music Lessons have a variety of uses. I have been teaching privately since 2012 and have had students range from age 5-73. All different levels and their reasons are just as varied as their ages. My lessons have an outline but lessons are individualized for each student to match their level and mindset towards learning new skills and ability to see certain things involved with playing their instrument or music production.  I OFFER REMOTE LESSONS FOR BOTH ON  SATURDAYS ONLY DUE TO MY CURRENT SCHEDULE. IF YOU LIVE IN HAMPTON VA, NEWPORT NEWS VA, OR  YORKTOWN VA, I CAN OFFER IN PERSON  OR VIRTUAL LESSONS DURING THE WEEK DAYS OR SATURDAY. ONCE MY AVAILABLITY CHANGES,

For Piano:

My foundation for piano is Jazz. I can read and play just about anything but for me, classical piano is a great study for technique and the mechanics of playing so that is what I use it for and how I use it to teach.  The bulk of what I teach is Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Rock\Funk(they're close cousins), Pop, Latin, and Afro-Cuban music. If you or your child is an absolute beginner, that is fine. We take it slow and work from the ground up. You will learn how to read music! While it isn't necessary to be a great musician, it is needed to understand how to count and conceptualize what you are playing. If desired, I can also teach you the more advanced aspects of music theory through playing so that you can personalize the songs you play with confidence and your own ideas. Ear training is included as it helps to round you out as a musician. No need to be on either side of that fence when you can use both to become the musician you desire to be.

For Drums:

This is my first love as a musician and holds a dear place in my heart. Its something about when the sticks get in your hand and you get behind a drum kit or percussion instruments in general that hasnt gone away til this day(been playing since I was 4 LOL). We go over the fundamentals such as rudiments, playing technique, posture, and mindset to get you solid and confident. We learn to read music for the same reasons I stated in the piano portion. Even if you never have to read it, you need to understand what you are playing so you can hear the possibilites of what can happen next or whats happening with the other musicians around you so you can be apart of whats going on. Nobody wants to be the drummer who just chopping with no dynamics or sense of cohesion with the rest of the instrumentalist and vocalists. We cover genre specific grooves and vocabulary so you can sound authentic when you are playing. If you want to get into advanced drumming thats fine too. Things like fills, independence and coordination studies, soloing, and more are covered to get you really into what you are playing. This applies to Rock/Funk, Gospel, R&B, Jazz, Latin, and Afro-Cuban music.
